Spencer Clarke Group, an award-winning recruitment agency based in Preston, has partnered with charity Active Lancashire to encourage more children to take up cycling as part of Sport England’s Uniting the Movement campaign.
Through the partnership, Spencer Clarke Group has donated bikes to 11 schools across Lancashire. These schools will use the bikes to deliver Bikeability projects or provide them directly to children who face barriers to active travel.
The bikes were supplied by Active Cycles, a community-driven bike shop based in Accrington’s Arndale Centre. The shop rescues discarded bikes from landfill, restores them to a high standard, and sells them at affordable prices to the local community.
The donation comes during Cycle to School Week 2025, a nationwide initiative led by Bikeability UK to inspire children and families to cycle more often.
Michelle Grimes, Project Lead at Active Cycles, said: “At Active Cycles, we believe every child should have the chance to experience the freedom and confidence that cycling brings.
“Thanks to Spencer Clarke Group’s generous support, more children across Lancashire will have access to safe, reliable bikes – whether that’s through Bikeability training or simply the joy of riding to school. This partnership shows what’s possible when local businesses and community projects come together for a shared goal.”
The donations come as Spencer Clarke Group and Active Lancashire mark the first year of their partnership, which has already seen the recruitment agency fund equipment purchases for two Lancashire schools and sponsor t-shirts for the 2024/25 SPAR Lancashire School Games.
Mike Shorrock, Managing Director of Spencer Clarke Group added, “We’re committed to building brighter futures for our community and supporting early years development is just one of the ways we are doing this.
“Early years development plays a critical role in lifelong learning, health, and wellbeing and our partnership with Active Lancashire and Active Cycles is helping us provide meaningful opportunities.
“By donating bikes to local schools, we’re encouraging children to be active, build confidence, and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.”
This latest initiative reflects the shared commitment of Spencer Clarke Group and Active Lancashire to breaking down barriers to active travel and inspiring the next generation to enjoy cycling.
