Moving more goes hand in hand with protecting our planet.

How we move affects our environment, and our environment affects where, when and how we can be active. From the quality of the air we breathe to the availability of safe green and blue spaces, a healthy environment is essential for healthy, active communities.

We want to help create places across Lancashire where being active is easier, more sustainable and accessible to everyone.

That means championing walking, wheeling and cycling, supporting access to nature, promoting active design and helping communities and organisations respond to the challenges of climate change.

We know that climate change is already affecting people's ability to be active.

Extreme heat, flooding and changing weather conditions can disrupt sport and physical activity, damage facilities and make outdoor activity more difficult – particularly for children, older people, disabled people and people living with long-term health conditions.

In Lancashire, we want to make sure our communities are prepared for these challenges while creating more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Because healthier people and a healthier planet go hand in hand.

What We Are Doing

Creating Active Environments

We advocate for active design to be considered in local plans, helping to create places that make walking, wheeling and cycling a natural part of everyday life. We work with partners across Lancashire to influence how our communities are designed, ensuring that people have access to safe, attractive and welcoming places to be active.

Connecting People With Nature

Access to green and blue spaces can provide valuable opportunities for people to move, connect and improve their wellbeing. Through our work, we're exploring ways to increase access to outdoor spaces, particularly for communities who may face greater barriers to accessing nature and physical activity.

Supporting Communities to Take Action

We want communities to have the knowledge, confidence and opportunities to take action for their local environment. Our work includes environmental volunteering, outdoor activities and community-led projects that bring people together while improving the places where they live and spend time.

Making Sport More Sustainable

Climate change has a growing impact on grassroots sport, from cancelled fixtures and damaged facilities to extreme temperatures affecting participation. We're working with clubs, organisations and partners to build awareness, share learning and support more sustainable approaches across sport and physical activity.

Our Flagship Projects

Play it Forward

Play It Forward helps create a greener, more inclusive Lancashire by giving unwanted sports kit a second life and making it easier for people to get active. The scheme collects clean, wearable sports clothing, shoes and accessories and makes them available for free, no questions asked. By keeping kit in use for longer, Play It Forward helps reduce textile waste while making physical activity more accessible to everyone. With collection points across Lancashire, communities can donate kit they no longer need or pick up items to support their own active journey.

Active Cycles

Active Cycles helps create a greener, more active Lancashire by rescuing unwanted bikes, restoring them and getting them back into the community.

Since 2021, the project has rescued more than 1,800 bikes and saved an estimated 41,100kg of CO₂e.With affordable refurbished bikes, free bike hire and volunteering opportunities, Active Cycles is helping more people choose sustainable ways to move while reducing waste.
