As part of their commitment to Environmental Sustainability, charity Active Lancashire is encouraging residents to “Play It Forward” with the launch of a new sports kit recirculation scheme that makes it easier for everyone to access the clothing and equipment they need to be active.
The initiative invites people to donate clean, wearable sports clothing and accessories at collection points across Lancashire. Anyone who needs sports kit is welcome to take items from the collection boxes, no questions asked. While donations are encouraged, they are never required.
The scheme aims to tackle two important challenges: reducing textile waste and making physical activity more accessible by ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation.
Michelle Grimes, Environment Lead for Active Lancashire, said: “Play It Forward is about creating a simple, community-led way for people to support one another. Many of us have sports clothing or trainers sitting unused at home, while others may be unable to participate because they can’t afford the kit they need.
“By giving these items a second life, we can help people get active while reducing waste and protecting the environment.”
Active Lancashire is seeking donations of clean, wearable items including: Trainers and sports shoes, joggers, leggings, shorts, sports tops, T-shirts, hoodies, jackets and sports bags. Items can be donated or collected at either of the following locations:
- Active Lancashire – Office 3–4 Farington House, Centurion Way, Leyland, PR26 6TW (Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:00pm)
- Active Cycles – Arndale Centre, Accrington, BB5 1EX (Tuesday & Thursday, 10:30am–3:30pm; Saturday, 11:00am–1:00pm)
- Donation boxes in Pendle and Rossendale are set to launch in the coming weeks.
Whether donating an unused pair of trainers or picking up a pair of shorts for summer training sessions, every item shared through Play It Forward helps extend the life of sports kit, reduce landfill waste, and make physical activity more inclusive.
Community members are encouraged to donate what they no longer need and help spread the word so that more people can benefit from the scheme.
