Active Lancashire Promotes Workplace Wellbeing on World Mental Health Day

Active Lancashire Promotes Workplace Wellbeing on World Mental Health Day

This World Mental Health Day, Active Lancashire is spotlighting the importance of mental health in the workplace and offering free resources through its Learning Zone to support employee wellbeing. In alignment with the World Federation of Mental Health’s theme for 2024, which focuses on workplace mental health, Active Lancashire is launching an array of online courses that aim to empower employees and employers to cultivate a more supportive work environment.

Workplaces play a crucial role in our mental health, with work-related stress, anxiety, and depression remaining prominent concerns in the UK. According to recent statistics, approximately 15% of UK workers have an existing mental health condition, and over 875,000 workers experienced work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2022/23. Mental health was also the fifth most common cause of sickness absence last year.

To address these challenges, Active Lancashire, in partnership with Rener Wellbeing, has developed a comprehensive online course series titled Introduction to Workplace Health. This series is designed for employees, managers, and business owners alike and provides practical knowledge and tools to enhance mental and physical wellbeing in professional settings.

The Introduction to Workplace Health course covers key areas, such as:

  • Managing Stress and Anxiety: Explore techniques for reducing stress and improving emotional resilience.
  • Boosting Resilience: Learn strategies to cope with life’s challenges and build a stronger mindset.
  • Integrating Physical Activity: Understand the role of exercise in mental clarity and emotional stability.
  • Improving Sleep and Nutrition: Discover how quality sleep and proper dietary habits contribute to overall wellness.

These courses not only aim to educate but also to inspire employees to take actionable steps toward a healthier, happier life. Completing the course could motivate participants to become qualified Workplace Health Champions, helping foster a positive and health-conscious workplace culture.

Active Lancashire’s Learning Zone also features the Awareness of Mental Health at Work course. This free training offers an ongoing journey to promote mental health awareness, eliminate stigma, and integrate mental health advocacy into company culture. It encourages participants to think critically about mental health, contributing to a more inclusive, supportive workplace where wellbeing is a priority all year round.

“Work can positively impact our mental health by providing us with a sense of purpose and valuable connections. However, it can also be a source of stress. Through our Learning Zone, we’re empowering individuals and organisations to prioritise mental health and create workplaces where people can thrive,” says Amanda Forrest, Active Lancashire Training Manager.

On this World Mental Health Day, Active Lancashire urges everyone to check in with colleagues, friends, and family, reinforcing that mental health matters every day. By prioritising mental health at work, we can create a more mindful, productive, and happier workforce for the future.

Active Cycles Wins BASIS Community Impact Award

Active Cycles Wins BASIS Community Impact Award

BASIS (the British Association for Sustainable Sport) is the UK’s sustainability hub for the sports industry. As a not-for-profit organisation, BASIS has supported sports clubs, venues, and governing bodies for over a decade, helping them reduce their environmental impact. Their mission is to empower the UK to become a world leader in sustainability within sport, using the power of sport to drive positive change in communities. The BASIS Community Impact Award acknowledges projects that demonstrate exceptional contributions to environmental and social sustainability.

Active Cycles, a social movement based in Accrington, is dedicated to transforming discarded bicycles into affordable, sustainable transport options. Managed by Active Lancashire, and delivered in partnership with Breaking Cycles CIC, the project collects bikes from waste sites, local councils, and public donations, refurbishing them for resale at significantly reduced prices. Adult bikes are available for just £50, while children’s bikes are sold for £25, ensuring cycling remains an accessible and eco-friendly choice for the local community. By reducing waste and promoting active travel, Active Cycles helps minimise the environmental impact of discarded bicycles.

In addition to selling affordable bikes, Active Cycles runs a range of community outreach initiatives. Earlier this year, the project distributed 150 bicycles in just 11 weeks through a pop-up shop at Burnley’s Charter Walk shopping centre. Active Cycles also supports NHS staff with bike loan schemes and partners with local prisons, offering prisoners the chance to learn valuable skills through bike refurbishment, aiding in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Darren Wright, Director of Communities at Active Lancashire, expressed his excitement over winning the BASIS award:
“We’re absolutely delighted to receive the BASIS Community Impact Award. Our mission has always been to make cycling affordable, reduce waste, and bring real benefits to our local communities. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, partners, and volunteers. We’re incredibly proud of the positive social and environmental change we’re fostering, and we look forward to continuing this important work.”

Active Cycles’ commitment to sustainability, affordable transport, and community development has made it a leading force for change in Lancashire. Winning the BASIS Community Impact Award solidifies its position as a model project, demonstrating how local initiatives can simultaneously address environmental challenges and improve the lives of the people they serve.

Preston based recruitment agency builds school playground for Blackpool primary school.

Preston based recruitment agency builds school playground for Blackpool primary school.

Preston based education recruitment agency, Spencer Clarke Group, has built a new school
playground for Mereside Primary Academy with a mixture of new and upcycled materials.
Part of the Fylde Coast Academy Trust (FCAT), Mereside Primary Academy welcomes over 200
children through its door with the motto “Learning Together, Achieving Together.”

Over the school summer holiday, local tradespeople PGA Contractors and the agency
employees themselves overhauled the playground which now boasts an outdoor library, an arts
& crafts wall, a construction zone, a music wall, and a curiosity shed.

Designed for nursery and reception children, the playground adheres to the Curiosity Approach,
a practice under the Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework.
The EYFS framework sets the standards that early years providers must meet to help children
gain the knowledge and skills they need to begin school. The playground provides early years
with a safe place to socialise, have fun and engage in construction play.

Throughout the build, consideration was made to conservation and sustainability, with existing
materials lovingly upcycled and repurposed where possible.
The playground boasts multiple opportunities for development and combines outdoor play with
traditional classroom subjects to provide what the school website describes as a “happy,
exciting learning environment where all our children are supported to do their best.”
Reception Teacher and EYFS Lead at Mereside Primary Academy Vicky Meeks, said “We can’t
thank Spencer Clarke Group enough for their time, generosity and hard work. They have made
such a difference to the playground and the children’s experience within the school.”
Head of Marketing Debbie Holden who headed up the project said “Through the agency, we
always give back where we can but this has been our most ambitious project to date.”
Holden continued, “We had a few challenges along the way, one being the great British weather
disrupting our plans, but we got there in the end and I couldn’t be prouder of what we have
achieved.”
Formed in 2017 by Lytham man, Mike Shorrock, Spencer Clarke Group is an award winning
recruitment agency that specialises in a range of key disciplines within both the public and
private sector. The agency employs 50 people at its offices at Bartle Court Business Centre,
near Preston.

Active Lancashire Launches ‘Cycle 60’ Challenge to Support Local Bike Refurbishment Programme

Active Lancashire Launches ‘Cycle 60’ Challenge to Support Local Bike Refurbishment Programme

Active Lancashire is thrilled to announce the launch of its ‘Cycle 60’ challenge this October, inviting members of the public to cycle 60 miles and raise £60. The proceeds from the fundraiser will directly benefit Active Cycles, a community initiative that gives new life to donated bicycles from Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire County Council, the general public, and even landfill sites.

Active Cycles refurbishes these bicycles and makes them available to the local community at highly affordable prices, with adult bikes priced at just £50 and children’s bikes at £25. Families can also take advantage of a special offer for children’s bikes—just £10 when they part-exchange an old bike at the shop.

This initiative doesn’t stop at providing affordable bikes. Active Cycles is involved in local schools, donating bikes to pupils to promote cycling as a mode of transport and a fun, healthy activity. These donations help more children learn to ride a bike, empowering them to stay active on their school journeys and during their free time.

Through collaboration with other Active Lancashire programs, Active Cycles also offers voluntary opportunities for the community. Participants can learn essential bicycle maintenance skills, gaining valuable experience that can boost employability.

How to Sign Up for the ‘Cycle 60’ Challenge:

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just looking for a way to get active, this challenge is open to all. Together, we can help Active Cycles continue to provide affordable bikes and vital skills to our community.

Colleagues from local youth employment service Pendle YES Hub showcased their offer to Pendle MP Jonathan Hinder and Mayor of Pendle Councillor Mohammad Aslam,
The visit aimed to provide a first-hand look at the impactful initiatives offered to local youth seeking employment support and other services, while also providing an opportunity for the MP and Mayor to speak to young people who have benefitted from the Hub’s services.
They heard first-hand accounts from individuals like Aaron, a young volunteer, who shared his journey of personal growth and development through the Hub’s programs. Aaron told the group that he was previously struggling to find a career within the arts, but has since began a career as a freelance musician and also teaches guitar lessons to fellow participants at the Hub.
The visit also enabled Hub colleagues to showcase their partnership with Active Cycles and Breaking Cycles CIC, who have been running free bike maintenance courses in the Hub which provides participants with an AQA qualification upon completion of the project.
Pendle MP Jonathan Hinder spoke highly of the Hub following his visit, saying “The co-location of job centre, youth club, safeguarding and mental health services all under one roof at the Pendle YES Hub was very impressive to see, and is an excellent example of joined-up partnership working.

It was particularly encouraging to meet some of the young people who have made the journey from initially being service users to now being volunteers at the hub, supporting other young people.”

Dave Marshall, Project Lead for Active Lancashire, said, “We enjoyed showing Jonathan and The Mayor of Pendle around the YES Hub and showcasing all the great work we are providing to young people in Pendle, with all our physical activities, wellbeing and employability support designed to guide them closer to the job market.”
The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Mohammad Aslam added, “I was delighted to have been given the opportunity to have a look round and experience at first-hand this wonderful facility.

“It is so encouraging to see the work that is being done – and the great success stories that have come from the Hub as a result of the support these young people have been given.”

Blackpool Zoo Orienteering Festival a fitting finale for SPAR Lancashire School Games

Blackpool Zoo Orienteering Festival a fitting finale for SPAR Lancashire School Games

Schools from Lancaster, Heysham, Blackpool, Wyre, and the Fylde Coast took part in the event which saw children develop a range of skills as they navigated their way around the zoo to the different animal enclosures.

Children also had the chance to take part in feeding times across the day as well as enjoy informative sessions on animal behaviours, characteristics and respective status in the wild.

Dave Rohman, Blackpool School Games Organiser, said: “We hosted our finale slightly differently this year with a new location and we have had some superb feedback from our Blackpool Zoo event.

“Children have said that they had never been to the zoo before as their parents could not afford it, and that they had never experienced seeing such awesome animals close up.

“Likewise, comments from teachers have been incredibly positive saying how special the event has been for their children as this kind of opportunity is out of reach for so many of them.”

SPAR, through its association with James Hall & Co. Ltd, renewed its sponsorship of the Lancashire School Games for an 18th consecutive year at the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year, continuing a successful partnership with Active Lancashire.

This academic year also saw the SPAR Lancashire School Games reformatted with an increased focus on running events and competitions in three distinct clusters in Lancashire – Coastal, Central, and Pennine – ensuring schoolchildren enjoy a programme of activity better aligned to local needs.
Over the course of 18 years, SPAR has invested more than £250,000 into the Lancashire School Games, and in 2023-24 the Games engaged 26,000 children in sport and activities across Lancashire.

Niels Dekkers, Retail Development Director at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “It is fantastic seeing schoolchildren enjoy physical activity at the Blackpool Zoo Orienteering Festival, as well as building important life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving.

“I would like to congratulate Active Lancashire and the School Games Organiser Network on delivering another successful year of impactful games, competitions and activities. It has been another Games that we have been proud to sponsor with the SPAR brand as we have done since 2006.”
Andy Clark, Schools Partnership Officer at Active Lancashire, said: “It really does bring home what the SPAR Lancashire School Games are all about when you so many young people at the summer finale enjoying physical activity while learning at the same time.

“Our cluster model of delivery this year has enabled us to reach even more children this year, especially those who do not regularly take part in physical activity. Our thanks go to SPAR and James Hall & Co. Ltd for their continued sponsorship and the efforts of our amazing School Games Organiser Network, without whom none of this would be achievable.”

Held across Burnley’s Thompson Park and Queens Park, children from schools in Burnley, Pendle, Ribble Valley, Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, and Rossendale enjoyed an action-packed day of games and activities.

The wide-ranging programme included football skills, crown green bowling, scootering, tennis skills, and a traditional sports day.
Other activities included kayaking, yoga, circus skills, groove ‘n’ glow dancing, orienteering and community gardening.
After a full agenda, the day concluded with a colour dash around the grounds of Queens Park.

Amira Akbar, age 8, from Longshaw Junior School in Blackburn, said: “I have had lots of fun competing with my friends and I have had chance to take part in new sports.

“I have done welly throwing, vortex, and tug of war. The colour run has been the best part of the day.”
Anastasia Zaporojenco, age 9, from Cherry Fold Community Primary School in Burnley, said: “I have enjoyed my day doing a lot of different activities that I have never done before.

“I discovered bugs, I have done the glow sticks, improved my football skills, thrown an NFL ball, and I have tested my reaction skills.”
Eddie Griss, age 9, from Lord Street Primary School in Colne, said: “I liked doing the crown green bowls as this was something new for me.
“Orienteering was my favourite activity as I like maths, geography and map reading. I have made memories with my friends, and it has been nice to be out in the sun with them.”

HAF Alliance Launches #HolidaysMatter Campaign

HAF Alliance Launches #HolidaysMatter Campaign

The HAF Alliance is launching the #HolidaysMatter campaign to highlight the benefits of holiday activities and secure continued support from policymakers and partners. The campaign calls for ongoing holiday provision, policy backing, funding, and partnerships to expand its reach and impact.

With over four million children growing up in low-income families, holiday activities in underserved communities are essential for bridging the widening inequalities gap. These programmes provide healthy, active, and fulfilling activities during school holidays, ensuring children have access to enriching experiences they might otherwise miss out on.

Holiday activities offer vital multi-sport opportunities, increasing children’s engagement in physical activity and supporting their overall development. Additionally, these programmes help mitigate learning loss, ensuring children return to school with a positive mindset and better educational outcomes.

Investing in the Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector is crucial. These organisations provide safe spaces and access to trusted adults during holidays, creating a robust support system for young people.

Through the provision of fun physical activities and nutritious meals, holiday activities address the key challenges of food insecurity, social isolation, and inactivity faced by families living underserved communities, supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of children and young people.

Pendle Teen Gains Employment Thanks to Local Youth Hub

Pendle Teen Gains Employment Thanks to Local Youth Hub

Pendle YES Hub, a youth Employment and Skills service based in Nelson, has supported a local teen in gaining employment.

The Hub, which is ran by Active Lancashire in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, Positive Action in the Community and Pendle Borough Council, provides support for 16–24-year-olds who are Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET).

Haashir Khan, age 18, was referred to the YES Hub by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in July 2023, after he faced uncertainty about his career options and struggled with confidence and boredom after finishing college. Here, Hashir was introduced to Shunem, a Youth Support Worker at the Hub, and the pair were quickly able to identify the barriers which Haashir faced to employment, crafting a plan to support the teen in achieving his goals.

Haashir engaged with the opportunities available at the Hub, participating in gym and badminton groups, and Empire Fighting Chance boxing sessions. His enthusiasm for self-improvement led him to take part in the Basic Life Saving Skills course and achieve Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work, both delivered by Lancashire Adult Learning.

The Hub’s collaboration with the Prince’s Trust and Lancashire Adult Learning played a crucial role in Haashir’s journey, enabling him to successfully complete a Digital Marketing course and the Team Programme, which included community projects, residentials, and skills development. His efforts culminated in valuable work experience at Star Print, where he has now secured paid employment. Additionally, Haashir volunteers at Gawthorpe Textiles in his spare time.

Haashir expressed his gratitude, saying, “The Pendle Yes Hub helped a lot when getting employment as it served as the central hub into making connections with the Prince’s Trust and Lancashire Adult Learning. While I was unemployed, it helped cure the boredom with some fun activities and courses to bolster my CV as well as the universal credit workers who encouraged me along my journey these past 12 months.”

Shunem praised Haashir’s dedication, stating, “It has been fantastic to see Haashir utilise the facilities at the Hub and watch him grow in confidence. He was super enthusiastic the whole time, and his hard work really paid off. Haashir’s success came from his hard work and dedication.”

The Pendle YES Hub will continue to support Haashir as he explores new opportunities for personal and professional growth. His journey is a shining example of how targeted support, and a positive environment can lead to significant achievements.

Active Lancashire Hosts Its First ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ Workshop

Active Lancashire Hosts Its First 'Activate: Our Club, Our Voice' Workshop

Active Lancashire’s Sport Welfare Officer Team successfully hosted their first ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ workshop last month. The event, which took place on 30th May, welcomed 25 members of Typhoons RUFC, including union team members, touch team players, social members, committee representatives, and coaches.

The two-hour session provided Typhoons RUFC with valuable insights on governance, culture, health and wellbeing practices, and participant engagement. The workshop began with a focus on inclusion, where participants engaged in discussions about fostering an inclusive environment within the club. This involved examining current practices and identifying opportunities to make the club more welcoming to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Michael Hill, Membership & Recruitment Officer, reflected on the workshop’s success: “On Thursday 30th May, Active Lancashire visited Typhoons RUFC for our very first membership workshop with members across the club to gain an understanding of how the club is run and member concerns along with recommendations and support provided by Active Lancashire. The membership workshop was very well received by members of the Typhoons, providing an alternative approach to membership feedback, using an interactive approach and team building exercises to formulate responses. The feedback received provides the club an opportunity to understand its strengths and weaknesses, allowing the club a further opportunity to grow and achieve a good member experience for all. I would like to thank Active Lancashire for coming over to Typhoons RUFC providing this opportunity, and I would love to work with them again in a year’s time for another workshop.”

Ross Adams-Newton, a member of Typhoons RUFC, also shared his experience: “The session with Active Lancashire was focussed on how to get more out of our interactions as a rugby club: It certainly helped me reflect on our overall approachability, but also my own – I’ll be putting a lot of what we learned to use outside of the club too. Nathan and Gwen were brilliant facilitators who allowed/encouraged self-reflection. I’ll be asking for them to come back next year!”

The workshop also delved into how different aspects of identity, such as race, gender, sexuality, and ability, intersect and impact the club experience. This segment aimed to raise awareness about the varied experiences of club members and the importance of considering these intersections in creating an inclusive environment. Members took part in interactive games and tasks, enabling them to practise some of the guidance which was given at the session, as well as sharing any relevant experiences they may have had.

Nathan Moulds, County Sport Welfare Officer at Active Lancashire, stated, “Our first Activate Workshop was a great success as it enabled us to understand some of the successes and challenges that grassroots-level clubs face. Being able to connect with organisations like Typhoons RUFC is crucial to Active Lancashire’s mission of improving the health and wellbeing of those across the County; through these workshops, we hope to provide insight and support for those working within the physical activity sector, ensuring that there is a safe culture which prioritises the welfare, wellbeing and health of all members.

“Being able to meet with members and hear their own experiences allows us to identify key areas of support, enabling Active Lancashire to develop its offerings of things like training and networking events. We’re delighted that our first event was a success, and look forward to hosting more Workshops with other Lancashire-based organisations in the future.”

Active Lancashire’s Sport Welfare Officers are continually looking to collaborate with clubs and organisations of any size across Lancashire, helping them to continually improve their cultures and practices. If your organisation would be interested in completing an ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ Workshop, please contact NMoulds@activelancashire.org.ukGHughes@activelancashire.org.uk, or call 07465 759911.

Active Lancashire Launches ‘Learning Zone’ to Boost Workplace Wellness

Party in the Park a fitting finale for SPAR Lancashire School Games

Active Lancashire is set to launch its new ‘Active Learning Zone’ on Friday 14th June, an online learning platform designed to enhance the skills of those working in the Sports and Physical Activity sectors. The new eLearning centre promotes workplace wellness and productivity through its myriad of courses that can be accessed online, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for busy professionals who need to balance training with their other commitments.

With the aim of reducing absenteeism and healthcare costs for businesses, the launch of the Active Learning Zone marks a significant milestone in Active Lancashire’s mission to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace. This platform not only provides high-quality training but also empowers individuals and organisations to make lasting impacts.

Emphasising the importance of the new platform and its benefit to the workplace, Active Lancashire’s Training and Development Manager, Amanda Forrest, said that “The courses are designed to foster a positive work environment and enhance company culture, ultimately leading to increased productivity and profitability.”

Forrest also spoke of the positive impact these courses would have on employee performance, stating that “Healthy employees are more focused, energetic and productive.”

One of the key offerings of the Active Learning Zone is the Workplace Health Champions course, which aims to cultivate health advocates within the workplace. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and resources to promote healthy choices and wellbeing amongst their colleagues. This course is crucial for creating supportive work environments where both individuals and organisations can thrive. What’s more, those who complete the course will gain access to the Workplace Health Champion Hub, an online forum with tools, resources and guidance on how to enhance their knowledge and skills; learners will also have the opportunity to interact with one another, sharing ideas, inspiration and successes.

Also offered on the platform are courses for the Safeguarding of Adults and Children. These courses take a hands-on approach, helping participants to identify and address the safeguarding needs of adults and children, respectively, in sports. Through interactive scenarios and discussions, coaches learn to implement person-centred care in their practices, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all athletes. The face-to-face workshops build confidence in handling sensitive situations and promotes a safety-centric approach to coaching. This training is essential for coaches and anyone involved in sport and physical activity settings, equipping them with the skills to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns.

First Aid training is another crucial component of the Active Learning Zone. The Emergency First Aid at Work course, compliant with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations of 1981, is tailored for lower-risk businesses. This course ensures that employees are equipped to handle emergencies, enhancing workplace safety and preparedness.

Additionally, Active Lancashire will offer several free courses aimed at addressing key aspects of wellbeing and compliance. These include Awareness of Mental Health at Work, Nutrition, Suicide Awareness, Sleep and GDPR. These courses provide essential knowledge that can help improve overall wellbeing and ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

For more information on the courses, please complete the form below or contact a member of the Active Lancashire team via email at: learningzone@activelancashire.org.uk.

Lancashire Organisations Unite for Mental Health Awareness Event organised by Rossendale Works.

Lancashire Organisations Unite for Mental Health Awareness Event organised by Rossendale Works.

Organisations from across Lancashire joined forces recently to participate in a football session organised by Rossendale Works in support of Mental Health Awareness Week. The event, usually open to jobseekers and those facing mental health challenges, aims to promote physical activity and provide a supportive environment for individuals of all abilities.

Football Works, a session delivered by Rossendale Works, offers free physical activity tailored for individuals with shared experiences. The initiative seeks to build confidence through socialisation, physical activity, and access to further support from Rossendale Works Staff.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, the session was expanded to include partners and local organisations, showcasing the support that Football Works and the broader Rossendale Works project provides. Attendees including local GPs, Social Prescribers, businesses, and community-based organisations, participated in a non-competitive game of football before learning about the mental health provisions offered by the project.

Michelle Grimes, Place Manager (Infrastructure) at Active Lancashire, commented, “The Football Works project is a great initiative set up by the Rossendale Works team in partnership with Rossendale Leisure Trust to deliver free, weekly support for those facing barriers to employment due to mental health challenges. Job seeking can be daunting and often leads to low self-esteem and declining mental wellbeing. The provision provided by Football Works enables participants to boost their mental wellbeing through physical activity, unlocking pathways for employability support provided by our mentors.”

Paul Becouarn, project lead for Rossendale Works, added, “It was amazing to see so many organisations from across the area come along to see what the session has to offer and how they can get involved. Mental Wellbeing is at the forefront of our mission at Rossendale Works and within the wider Active Lancashire organisation, so hosting an event such as this to raise awareness and build collaborations with other organisations is fantastic.”
The event and regular Football Works session is ran in collaboration with Rossendale Leisure Trust, who provide several activities open to those of all abilities, ages and backgrounds seeking to improve their mental wellbeing. Throughout Mental Health Awareness week, Rossendale Leisure Trust hosted a range of sessions alongside the Football Works event, which aimed to showcase the support available for those struggling with their mental wellbeing, including one-to-one coaching sessions and wellbeing walks.

Jodie Lee, Marketing Executive at Rossendale Leisure Trust, echoed Michelle and Paul’s words, saying, “We’re delighted to be able to collaborate with Rossendale Works on their Football Works project, which contributes to our wider aim of improving the mental wellbeing of those in our community.

“The focus of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is movement, and we believe that physical activity plays a pivotal role in improving the mental wellbeing of individuals. We’re proud to offer a range of provision for members of our community to get involved in, and working with organisations such as Rossendale Works not only enables us to connect with more Rossendale residents, but expand the provision and support which we offer to contribute to a happier, healthier Rossendale.”

Rossendale Works is funded by Rossendale Council as part of the £2.6m received from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It is delivered on behalf of Rossendale Council by Active Lancashire in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions.

Skating, scooting and BMX fun at SPAR Lancashire School Games

Skating, scooting and BMX fun at SPAR Lancashire School Games

School pupils from East Lancashire have enjoyed skateboarding, scootering, and BMXing as part of the SPAR Lancashire School Games.

Held at Junction 4 Urban Skatepark in Darwen, 240 primary and secondary school boys from 24 schools in Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Rossendale learned new skills, developed confidence, and picked up a few tricks along the way.

The sessions were run across two days and the pupils were under the expert eye of professional coaches including skateboarder Cath Shanks, scooter rider Indy Clayson, and BMX rider Leon Perkins.

In the 2023-24 academic year, the Games have been reformatted with an increased focus on hosting events and competitions in three distinct clusters in Lancashire – Coastal, Central, and Pennine – ensuring schoolchildren enjoy a programme of activity better aligned to local needs.

Schoolchildren and staff from schools participating at Junction 4 gave a big thumbs up to the activities, and the programme of events that have been held so far this year.

Yusuf Khansia, a Year 7 pupil at Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School in Blackburn, said: “I have ridden a bike before, but I had never done skateboarding or scootering. It was really good fun. The BMX was my favourite and I learned how to do the surfer move on it.”

Zak Ali, a Year 5 pupil from Heasandford Primary School in Burnley, said: “The skatepark was amazing and I really enjoyed all the activities. Scootering was my favourite, and I couldn’t believe I was being taught by a professional. It was great day, and I would like to do it again.”

William Cawley, Head of PE at Whitworth Community High School in Rossendale, said: “With the changes to the School Games this year the activities have offered a wider pathway of opportunities for our children. The skating, scootering, and BMXing are something new and exciting and we have children here that have not previously taken part in the Games.

“By encouraging children to try new things they are gaining confidence and learning that they can play sport. The Games have had a positive knock-on impact on levels of participation in both intra and inter-school sport this year. Participation is significantly higher than we have previously seen, and I’m delighted at this development.”

Andy Clark, Schools Partnership Officer at Active Lancashire, said: “We had a fantastic two days at Junction 4. It was awesome to see the children enjoying the sessions and I was hugely impressed by how quickly they picked up the techniques they were being taught.

“Two of the three activities in skateboarding and BMX cycling will be sports at the Olympics in Paris later this year and it would be brilliant if the sessions have inspired the children to take up any of the activities going forward.”

The Lancashire School Games are run by Active Lancashire and the School Games Organiser Network and have been sponsored by SPAR through its association with James Hall & Co. Ltd since 2006.

In 2022-23, the Games engaged 24,000 children in sport and activities across Lancashire through 23 feature events and competitions.
