HAF Alliance Launches #HolidaysMatter Campaign

HAF Alliance Launches #HolidaysMatter Campaign

The HAF Alliance is launching the #HolidaysMatter campaign to highlight the benefits of holiday activities and secure continued support from policymakers and partners. The campaign calls for ongoing holiday provision, policy backing, funding, and partnerships to expand its reach and impact.

With over four million children growing up in low-income families, holiday activities in underserved communities are essential for bridging the widening inequalities gap. These programmes provide healthy, active, and fulfilling activities during school holidays, ensuring children have access to enriching experiences they might otherwise miss out on.

Holiday activities offer vital multi-sport opportunities, increasing children’s engagement in physical activity and supporting their overall development. Additionally, these programmes help mitigate learning loss, ensuring children return to school with a positive mindset and better educational outcomes.

Investing in the Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector is crucial. These organisations provide safe spaces and access to trusted adults during holidays, creating a robust support system for young people.

Through the provision of fun physical activities and nutritious meals, holiday activities address the key challenges of food insecurity, social isolation, and inactivity faced by families living underserved communities, supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of children and young people.

Pendle Teen Gains Employment Thanks to Local Youth Hub

Pendle Teen Gains Employment Thanks to Local Youth Hub

Pendle YES Hub, a youth Employment and Skills service based in Nelson, has supported a local teen in gaining employment.

The Hub, which is ran by Active Lancashire in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, Positive Action in the Community and Pendle Borough Council, provides support for 16–24-year-olds who are Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET).

Haashir Khan, age 18, was referred to the YES Hub by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in July 2023, after he faced uncertainty about his career options and struggled with confidence and boredom after finishing college. Here, Hashir was introduced to Shunem, a Youth Support Worker at the Hub, and the pair were quickly able to identify the barriers which Haashir faced to employment, crafting a plan to support the teen in achieving his goals.

Haashir engaged with the opportunities available at the Hub, participating in gym and badminton groups, and Empire Fighting Chance boxing sessions. His enthusiasm for self-improvement led him to take part in the Basic Life Saving Skills course and achieve Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work, both delivered by Lancashire Adult Learning.

The Hub’s collaboration with the Prince’s Trust and Lancashire Adult Learning played a crucial role in Haashir’s journey, enabling him to successfully complete a Digital Marketing course and the Team Programme, which included community projects, residentials, and skills development. His efforts culminated in valuable work experience at Star Print, where he has now secured paid employment. Additionally, Haashir volunteers at Gawthorpe Textiles in his spare time.

Haashir expressed his gratitude, saying, “The Pendle Yes Hub helped a lot when getting employment as it served as the central hub into making connections with the Prince’s Trust and Lancashire Adult Learning. While I was unemployed, it helped cure the boredom with some fun activities and courses to bolster my CV as well as the universal credit workers who encouraged me along my journey these past 12 months.”

Shunem praised Haashir’s dedication, stating, “It has been fantastic to see Haashir utilise the facilities at the Hub and watch him grow in confidence. He was super enthusiastic the whole time, and his hard work really paid off. Haashir’s success came from his hard work and dedication.”

The Pendle YES Hub will continue to support Haashir as he explores new opportunities for personal and professional growth. His journey is a shining example of how targeted support, and a positive environment can lead to significant achievements.

Active Lancashire Hosts Its First ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ Workshop

Active Lancashire Hosts Its First 'Activate: Our Club, Our Voice' Workshop

Active Lancashire’s Sport Welfare Officer Team successfully hosted their first ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ workshop last month. The event, which took place on 30th May, welcomed 25 members of Typhoons RUFC, including union team members, touch team players, social members, committee representatives, and coaches.

The two-hour session provided Typhoons RUFC with valuable insights on governance, culture, health and wellbeing practices, and participant engagement. The workshop began with a focus on inclusion, where participants engaged in discussions about fostering an inclusive environment within the club. This involved examining current practices and identifying opportunities to make the club more welcoming to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Michael Hill, Membership & Recruitment Officer, reflected on the workshop’s success: “On Thursday 30th May, Active Lancashire visited Typhoons RUFC for our very first membership workshop with members across the club to gain an understanding of how the club is run and member concerns along with recommendations and support provided by Active Lancashire. The membership workshop was very well received by members of the Typhoons, providing an alternative approach to membership feedback, using an interactive approach and team building exercises to formulate responses. The feedback received provides the club an opportunity to understand its strengths and weaknesses, allowing the club a further opportunity to grow and achieve a good member experience for all. I would like to thank Active Lancashire for coming over to Typhoons RUFC providing this opportunity, and I would love to work with them again in a year’s time for another workshop.”

Ross Adams-Newton, a member of Typhoons RUFC, also shared his experience: “The session with Active Lancashire was focussed on how to get more out of our interactions as a rugby club: It certainly helped me reflect on our overall approachability, but also my own – I’ll be putting a lot of what we learned to use outside of the club too. Nathan and Gwen were brilliant facilitators who allowed/encouraged self-reflection. I’ll be asking for them to come back next year!”

The workshop also delved into how different aspects of identity, such as race, gender, sexuality, and ability, intersect and impact the club experience. This segment aimed to raise awareness about the varied experiences of club members and the importance of considering these intersections in creating an inclusive environment. Members took part in interactive games and tasks, enabling them to practise some of the guidance which was given at the session, as well as sharing any relevant experiences they may have had.

Nathan Moulds, County Sport Welfare Officer at Active Lancashire, stated, “Our first Activate Workshop was a great success as it enabled us to understand some of the successes and challenges that grassroots-level clubs face. Being able to connect with organisations like Typhoons RUFC is crucial to Active Lancashire’s mission of improving the health and wellbeing of those across the County; through these workshops, we hope to provide insight and support for those working within the physical activity sector, ensuring that there is a safe culture which prioritises the welfare, wellbeing and health of all members.

“Being able to meet with members and hear their own experiences allows us to identify key areas of support, enabling Active Lancashire to develop its offerings of things like training and networking events. We’re delighted that our first event was a success, and look forward to hosting more Workshops with other Lancashire-based organisations in the future.”

Active Lancashire’s Sport Welfare Officers are continually looking to collaborate with clubs and organisations of any size across Lancashire, helping them to continually improve their cultures and practices. If your organisation would be interested in completing an ‘Activate: Our Club, Our Voice’ Workshop, please contact NMoulds@activelancashire.org.ukGHughes@activelancashire.org.uk, or call 07465 759911.

Active Lancashire Launches ‘Learning Zone’ to Boost Workplace Wellness

Party in the Park a fitting finale for SPAR Lancashire School Games

Active Lancashire is set to launch its new ‘Active Learning Zone’ on Friday 14th June, an online learning platform designed to enhance the skills of those working in the Sports and Physical Activity sectors. The new eLearning centre promotes workplace wellness and productivity through its myriad of courses that can be accessed online, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for busy professionals who need to balance training with their other commitments.

With the aim of reducing absenteeism and healthcare costs for businesses, the launch of the Active Learning Zone marks a significant milestone in Active Lancashire’s mission to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace. This platform not only provides high-quality training but also empowers individuals and organisations to make lasting impacts.

Emphasising the importance of the new platform and its benefit to the workplace, Active Lancashire’s Training and Development Manager, Amanda Forrest, said that “The courses are designed to foster a positive work environment and enhance company culture, ultimately leading to increased productivity and profitability.”

Forrest also spoke of the positive impact these courses would have on employee performance, stating that “Healthy employees are more focused, energetic and productive.”

One of the key offerings of the Active Learning Zone is the Workplace Health Champions course, which aims to cultivate health advocates within the workplace. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and resources to promote healthy choices and wellbeing amongst their colleagues. This course is crucial for creating supportive work environments where both individuals and organisations can thrive. What’s more, those who complete the course will gain access to the Workplace Health Champion Hub, an online forum with tools, resources and guidance on how to enhance their knowledge and skills; learners will also have the opportunity to interact with one another, sharing ideas, inspiration and successes.

Also offered on the platform are courses for the Safeguarding of Adults and Children. These courses take a hands-on approach, helping participants to identify and address the safeguarding needs of adults and children, respectively, in sports. Through interactive scenarios and discussions, coaches learn to implement person-centred care in their practices, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all athletes. The face-to-face workshops build confidence in handling sensitive situations and promotes a safety-centric approach to coaching. This training is essential for coaches and anyone involved in sport and physical activity settings, equipping them with the skills to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns.

First Aid training is another crucial component of the Active Learning Zone. The Emergency First Aid at Work course, compliant with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations of 1981, is tailored for lower-risk businesses. This course ensures that employees are equipped to handle emergencies, enhancing workplace safety and preparedness.

Additionally, Active Lancashire will offer several free courses aimed at addressing key aspects of wellbeing and compliance. These include Awareness of Mental Health at Work, Nutrition, Suicide Awareness, Sleep and GDPR. These courses provide essential knowledge that can help improve overall wellbeing and ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

For more information on the courses, please complete the form below or contact a member of the Active Lancashire team via email at: learningzone@activelancashire.org.uk.

Lancashire Organisations Unite for Mental Health Awareness Event organised by Rossendale Works.

Lancashire Organisations Unite for Mental Health Awareness Event organised by Rossendale Works.

Organisations from across Lancashire joined forces recently to participate in a football session organised by Rossendale Works in support of Mental Health Awareness Week. The event, usually open to jobseekers and those facing mental health challenges, aims to promote physical activity and provide a supportive environment for individuals of all abilities.

Football Works, a session delivered by Rossendale Works, offers free physical activity tailored for individuals with shared experiences. The initiative seeks to build confidence through socialisation, physical activity, and access to further support from Rossendale Works Staff.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, the session was expanded to include partners and local organisations, showcasing the support that Football Works and the broader Rossendale Works project provides. Attendees including local GPs, Social Prescribers, businesses, and community-based organisations, participated in a non-competitive game of football before learning about the mental health provisions offered by the project.

Michelle Grimes, Place Manager (Infrastructure) at Active Lancashire, commented, “The Football Works project is a great initiative set up by the Rossendale Works team in partnership with Rossendale Leisure Trust to deliver free, weekly support for those facing barriers to employment due to mental health challenges. Job seeking can be daunting and often leads to low self-esteem and declining mental wellbeing. The provision provided by Football Works enables participants to boost their mental wellbeing through physical activity, unlocking pathways for employability support provided by our mentors.”

Paul Becouarn, project lead for Rossendale Works, added, “It was amazing to see so many organisations from across the area come along to see what the session has to offer and how they can get involved. Mental Wellbeing is at the forefront of our mission at Rossendale Works and within the wider Active Lancashire organisation, so hosting an event such as this to raise awareness and build collaborations with other organisations is fantastic.”
The event and regular Football Works session is ran in collaboration with Rossendale Leisure Trust, who provide several activities open to those of all abilities, ages and backgrounds seeking to improve their mental wellbeing. Throughout Mental Health Awareness week, Rossendale Leisure Trust hosted a range of sessions alongside the Football Works event, which aimed to showcase the support available for those struggling with their mental wellbeing, including one-to-one coaching sessions and wellbeing walks.

Jodie Lee, Marketing Executive at Rossendale Leisure Trust, echoed Michelle and Paul’s words, saying, “We’re delighted to be able to collaborate with Rossendale Works on their Football Works project, which contributes to our wider aim of improving the mental wellbeing of those in our community.

“The focus of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is movement, and we believe that physical activity plays a pivotal role in improving the mental wellbeing of individuals. We’re proud to offer a range of provision for members of our community to get involved in, and working with organisations such as Rossendale Works not only enables us to connect with more Rossendale residents, but expand the provision and support which we offer to contribute to a happier, healthier Rossendale.”

Rossendale Works is funded by Rossendale Council as part of the £2.6m received from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It is delivered on behalf of Rossendale Council by Active Lancashire in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions.

Skating, scooting and BMX fun at SPAR Lancashire School Games

Skating, scooting and BMX fun at SPAR Lancashire School Games

School pupils from East Lancashire have enjoyed skateboarding, scootering, and BMXing as part of the SPAR Lancashire School Games.

Held at Junction 4 Urban Skatepark in Darwen, 240 primary and secondary school boys from 24 schools in Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Rossendale learned new skills, developed confidence, and picked up a few tricks along the way.

The sessions were run across two days and the pupils were under the expert eye of professional coaches including skateboarder Cath Shanks, scooter rider Indy Clayson, and BMX rider Leon Perkins.

In the 2023-24 academic year, the Games have been reformatted with an increased focus on hosting events and competitions in three distinct clusters in Lancashire – Coastal, Central, and Pennine – ensuring schoolchildren enjoy a programme of activity better aligned to local needs.

Schoolchildren and staff from schools participating at Junction 4 gave a big thumbs up to the activities, and the programme of events that have been held so far this year.

Yusuf Khansia, a Year 7 pupil at Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School in Blackburn, said: “I have ridden a bike before, but I had never done skateboarding or scootering. It was really good fun. The BMX was my favourite and I learned how to do the surfer move on it.”

Zak Ali, a Year 5 pupil from Heasandford Primary School in Burnley, said: “The skatepark was amazing and I really enjoyed all the activities. Scootering was my favourite, and I couldn’t believe I was being taught by a professional. It was great day, and I would like to do it again.”

William Cawley, Head of PE at Whitworth Community High School in Rossendale, said: “With the changes to the School Games this year the activities have offered a wider pathway of opportunities for our children. The skating, scootering, and BMXing are something new and exciting and we have children here that have not previously taken part in the Games.

“By encouraging children to try new things they are gaining confidence and learning that they can play sport. The Games have had a positive knock-on impact on levels of participation in both intra and inter-school sport this year. Participation is significantly higher than we have previously seen, and I’m delighted at this development.”

Andy Clark, Schools Partnership Officer at Active Lancashire, said: “We had a fantastic two days at Junction 4. It was awesome to see the children enjoying the sessions and I was hugely impressed by how quickly they picked up the techniques they were being taught.

“Two of the three activities in skateboarding and BMX cycling will be sports at the Olympics in Paris later this year and it would be brilliant if the sessions have inspired the children to take up any of the activities going forward.”

The Lancashire School Games are run by Active Lancashire and the School Games Organiser Network and have been sponsored by SPAR through its association with James Hall & Co. Ltd since 2006.

In 2022-23, the Games engaged 24,000 children in sport and activities across Lancashire through 23 feature events and competitions.

Pendle-Based Youth Service Provides Mental Health Support to Local Teen

Pendle-Based Youth Service Provides Mental Health Support to Local Teen

Pendle YES Hub, a youth employment service ran by Active Lancashire and Positive Action in the Community (PAC) on behalf of Pendle Council, has provided support to a young woman needing support with her mental health. Having recently completed a diploma in Travel and Tourism, Kayleigh Murren, was struggling to find employment which was inclusive to her needs, and began to suffer from poor mental health as a result. Pendle’s Community Prevention and Engagement team referred Kayleigh to Pendle YES Hub, which offers bespoke provision for young people who may need support with mental wellbeing, as well as barriers to employment. Here, Kayleigh was introduced to mental health services provided by Lancashire MIND. Working with support mentor Colin Whittaker, Kayleigh was able to complete a six week wellbeing course that helped to tackle her anxiety through a mixture of talking therapies and physical activity. Participating in activities like badminton, walking, and cycling not only boosted Kayleigh’s confidence but also introduced her to peers facing similar barriers. Kayleigh was also able to access provision specifically for those with low confidence, such as a drama programme delivered by Burnley Youth Theatre. Through attending these sessions, Kayleigh felt that she was able to find an environment which accommodated and supported her needs, stating that, “Pendle YES Hub has helped improve my confidence and has enabled me to meet people with similar experiences to me. Taking part in activities at the Hub has really improved my mental health, with the structure of regular sessions also helping my autism.” With her mental wellbeing improving, Kayleigh felt ready to begin considering employment. Working with Pendle YES Hub’s Youth Engagement Worker Shunem, she was able to access qualifications and courses such as Basic Lifesaving Skills and Workplace First Aid in the hopes to enhance her CV. Now, Kayleigh is working with Shunem to enhance her confidence and interview skills using the in-house employment support provided by Pendle YES Hub, and is set to begin an 8-week course with Pendle House which is designed to support those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who are seeking employment. Stephen Barnes, Chair of Nelson Town Deal added: “Getting young people aged 16 – 24 into employment and training is a number one priority for the Nelson Town Deal and our local economy. “It is heartening to hear Kayleigh’s story and know that the project is helping her grow in confidence and skills.” Thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), Pendle YES Hub is able to provide targeted provision for 16-24 year olds who are struggling to find employment, or would like support with mental or physical wellbeing. Pendle YES Hub is based at 39-41 Scotland Road, Nelson, BB9 7UT and is open Monday to Friday, 9am – 3.30pm. For more information, visit https://www.activelancashire.org.uk/projects/pendleyeshub

Brunshaw Primary School Receive Free Recycled Bikes To Support Bikeability Sessions

Brunshaw Primary School Receive Free Recycled Bikes To Support Bikeability Sessions

A community-led bike refurbishment shop has donated cycles and helmets to Brunshaw Primary School in Burnley to help their pupils learn to ride safely.

Active Cycles is a community hub in Accrington delivered by the charity Active Lancashire, which works with a number of partners to collect and refurbish bicycles to prevent them from ending up in landfills.

In total, Active Cycles donated seven bicycles, six helmets, and six bike vouchers to Brunshaw Primary School, to help all students access bikeability learning sessions even if they do not have their own bikes.

Kevin Kay, PE Coordinator at the school, said, “We are grateful for these donations from Active Cycles. This will greatly benefit students who may not otherwise have access to a bike, providing all students with the opportunity to learn how to safely take part in cycling as a healthy and fun outdoor activity. This initiative aligns with our school’s commitment to promoting physical fitness and wellbeing amongst all of our students.”

In addition to the donation, Active Cycles is set to open a temporary pop-up bike shop in Burnley at the Charter Walk shopping centre in partnership with Burnley Leisure and Culture. For seven weeks, their recycled bikes will be available to purchase from just £25 for a child’s bike, further supporting the accessibility and affordability of cycling locally.

Michelle Grimes, Project Lead at Active Cycles, emphasized the importance of ensuring accessibility to bikes for all children. “At Active Cycles, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy of cycling. Through our partnership with Brunshaw Primary School and the low cost bikes that will soon be available at our Burnley shop, we aim to make cycling accessible to all young people in the area, including those from families who may face financial barriers.”

Recently, Active Cycles ran a successful crowdfunding campaign, raising a total of £39,421 to implement several initiatives for the benefit of people in Lancashire, including led-rides and maintenance workshops from their main shop in Accrington. The project was also the winner of the Green Award at the most recent BBC Lancashire Make a Difference Awards.
